Do you struggle to prioritize your backlog or daily tasks? Then maybe you are not aligned with your higher goals! Let me show you how it all connects ⬇

⭐ Always start at the top and define a vision & mission, so that all your daily actions are aligned with higher goals. You can use your company vision & mission, but if you have a product vision & mission, even better.

🛣 Next define a product strategy based on your vision & mission. If your company has a company strategy you should align with it. A strategy should be designed for approx. 2 years.

🚀 Based on your strategy you are able to define quartely OKRs. While Objectives describe the qualitative goal, Key Results describe the quantitative goals. With the set OKRs you are able to derive Initiatives, that will help you to reach your OKRs.

📆 With your Initiatives you are now able to plan what you want to do in the next couple of weeks. And now it’s just a small step to you daily tasks, since your next weeks are clearly defined.

💡 So the next time you are struggling with prioritizing your backlog or align ideas between stakeholders, check back with your OKRs, strategy, mission and vision to see how it all aligns.

Why did I start @productheart? 🧐

I started @productheart because I wanted to share the learnings I would’ve needed the most, when I was transitioning into product management.

I was overwhelmed with all the information out there: Hundreds of long blogposts, thick books and lengthy videos. How should I learn all this in a short time? 🤯

That’s why I decided to go the other way: Creating short, crisp content, so that you can give yourself an overview of the most needed information 💡 Becoming 1% better everyday.

I basically found a problem (which I thought was worth solving) and tried to use Instagram as a possible solution.

Getting all your feedback I think the problem is worth solving, but what do you think: What alternative solutions would work even better? 🙈🧐

Have you ever asked yourself why not all product ideas work? There can be several reasons, let's explore them ⬇️

Missing Problem-Solution Fit 🤔

It can happen (more often than you think), that you are not solving the right problem. People don't care about it and therefore your idea will not work out. At this stage you first need to tackle the right problem, before you get into building a product.

Missing Product-Market Fit 🛍

If you found a problem worth pursuing, you can start to look for the right solution. This solution will be your product. Now you have made sure that the problem is worth solving, so make sure, that you create a great solution.

Missing Business Model Fit 💼

You have a problem worth solving, a great solution for this problem and still your idea can fail. If your business model doesn't work out (e.g. you can't scale, technology is not there or legal problems arise), the best problem and solution won't help.

Make sure, that you know how to scale and grow your solution after you have found it.

Do you want to talk to customers? Then you better avoid these common mistakes when interviewing customers 👇

❓Suggestive Questions

Ask open-ended questions instead of questions like “Would you buy this product?”. People should tell you a story so that you can derive actions from it, instead of telling you if they would buy your product.

🔮 Future Behaviour

Another reason why you should not ask if people would buy your product: You can’t predict future behaviour. Instead ask for past experiences and how they treated a situation in the past.

💬 Talking too much

Interviewing your customers is not a pitch! You don’t want to convince possible customers from your product. Instead be quiet most of the time and listen to what your customers are saying.

Do you want to create successful products? Then you should use the lean startup method by Eric Ries 💡

The lean startup method helps you to make sure that you build something people want and saves you the time building something nobody waited for 🤓

So what is the lean startup method about? 🤔

1️⃣ First you create a reduced version your product. It should only include your main assumption.

2️⃣ Release the product or a prototype of it in order to measure data. You can either measure quantitative or qualitative data depending on your hypothesis.

3️⃣ With this data you can start to learn: Find out what parts are still missing, why people engaged with your product or why they didn't.

🔄 Repeat! Now you can iterate and create another version of your product, collect data and learn again.

🚀 Do this until you achieve your goals!

You want to get feedback from your customer, but struggle to choose the right research method? 🤔 Then you can use this framework to choose a method ⤵️

💡 What are Research Methods?
Research methods answer your questions about your customers. Different methods answer different questions, that’s why it’s so important to select the right method. The right method can have a leverage on your findings.

❓ Ask yourself the following questions: Do you want to know...
➡️ what people do?
➡️ what people say?
➡️ why people do/say it?
➡️ how many people do/say it?
Decide what you want to find out. Now you know from which area you should choose your method.

🛣 Research Journey
At the beginning of your product discovery, you usually start with qualitative methods as you want to understand the why. First you want to understand the problem space, so you talk to people and let them explain. Later on in the solution space you want to have stronger evidence with quantitative methods.

🧠 Keep in mind
Your presence might influence what people say or do. If you invite customers into a lab, their behaviour might be different from the real world. So try to keep everything as realistic as possible.

Ever heard of Customer Jobs? 🤔 It’s another approach besides Personas to understand your customer better. Let’s explore how you can define customer jobs. ⤵️

What are Customer Jobs? 👩‍🍳👨‍🎨
Customer Jobs describe what your customers try to get done when using your product. It can be a task they want to perform, problems they want to solve or needs they want to satisfy.

Decide on your research questions 💡
In order to define possible jobs, you need to talk to your customer and explore what they really want to do. For the customer interview you can use the following research questions (see carousel.)

In case you ask yourself what a research question is: Research questions are the questions you want to get answered, but you don’t ask your customer these questions. Instead you formulate interview questions based on the research questions.

Define interview questions 💬
Based on your research questions you can now define interview questions, which you can ask your customers. They should be open-ended and bring your customer to tell a story. Don't try to talk about the future or wishes and likes. Instead ask for past behaviour.

Synthesize to customer jobs 🙌🏽
With all the insights you can go back to your research questions and answer them. With that you have a handful of possible customer jobs. Congrats 👏
